The theme of this show is Cop Optimization. And it starts from within. Sure, agencies need to provide the appropriate support to create a thriving police department. But it all begins with what they have to work with. Resources and People.
How do you build, train, and prepare people to compete in a profession wrought with despair? Not necessarily our own despair but that of those we are sworn to serve and protect. Afterall, not too often are we called to the scene of childs birthday party that is going perfectly, just to share in a piece of cake. Nope - you know what I’m talking about.
The answer is simple. We coach them up. How - with a coach!
In policing, we have a long history of training groups. We are building teams. We are building strong organizational cultures that create momentum to move the mass toward desired outcomes. We feed and nourish the culture. In biological terms, this process is called endocytosis, where cells throughout the body ingest nutrients, fluids, proteins, and other molecules for growth and optimization. When it is all working well, we flourish.
But what happens when the individual's cells begin acting up? When something gets out of balance, and the cells begin to malfunction, diseases like muscular dystrophy, Alzheimer’s, and other maladies can befall us. Nature struggles to find balance, and in the struggle is where growth happens or falters.
It is in our best interest to fight for balance.
Greg Zaroslinski is among the most sought-after coaches in the Performance Protocol stable of coaches. This is not by accident. Greg knows the struggle for balance intimately, and thankfully, he has dedicated his life to sharing these lessons.
Lesson one: You can be professionally successful but still not be in balance. One day you are on top of the world, and the next, you are not. It only takes one moment, or in the world of policing, one call to upend everything. How we prepare ourselves can be the difference between success and trouble.
So, take some time to listen to Greg tell his story, and you will quickly understand why others seek him out. One of my favorite lines from this episode: Delusion is not the solution. A conversation about how self-care and self-management are often misunderstood but why it is so important.
Greg has a challenge for all of you. If today you were provided the opportunity to win a million dollar prize, all you had to do was go get it, would you? What’s the catch? No catch, just a million bucks sitting in a mailbox at the end of a thirty mile run. You have a few hours to get there before it disappears. Can you make it there in time?
