Are you tough enough? Do you have the strength to power through a career in policing? The physical is a big part of the equation, but the mind is bigger. That's why we spent some time talking with Andy Riise on this episode of the Coptimizer Podcast.
Andy is a Mental Toughness Coach. He has forged his career in the toughest environments there are to offer. From West Point to the battlefields, to the arena. Coach Riise has been working at the pinnacle of military operations and professional sports, so I was really appreciative of him spending some of his valuable time with us to share his wisdom with police officers.
Toughness is often misunderstood. Sure, it can be measured by physical prowess, but it is often tested in more sublime ways. It starts on the inside. In this episode Coach Riise breaks down what he calls the Four C's - Control, Commitment, Challenge, and Confidence.
We also spent some time talking about a book he co-authored and was the senior editor of. Deliberate Discomfort: How U.S. Special Forces Operations Forces Overcome Fear and Dare to Win by Getting Comfortable Being Uncomfortable. The title of the book captures the essence of the stories held within. It is a journey filled with discomfort, not only for those whose lives and stories are depicted but for the reader who wants to know how to get more from themselves. The lessons of GRIT and Resilience contained within are awe-inspiring
Whether you think you need to toughen up a little, a lot, or not at all, there is something in this episode everyone.
