“I exist on this earth to help others.”
How is that for the opening line of a personal mission statement? No need to look anywhere else for any clarification. If I didn't know any better, I would think that I am reading the first line of a police officer application where we ask, "Why do you want to be a police officer?"
If you are a police leader, review your applicants' answers to this question. But first, if you are not asking this question, it might be past time to start. The answer to the question will almost always be a variation of them, "because I want to help others."
Finding the right person to enter into the profession of policing is the first and most important priority for police departments. You can't build a solid foundation with the wrong people. When you find them, you have to invest in them.
In this episode of the #CoptimizerPodcast, I brought the guest into the home studio and dug into the pressing question of the day. How do we find, support, and encourage the next generation of young Americans to enter into policing? Who better to speak with about this than with Lucas Woody, a positive performance coach! A young(er) version representative of today's working generation that works to help connect people to their passion. Thus, his powerful opening purpose statement, "I exist on this earth to help others."
If you are struggling to understand why recruiting is difficult in today's world, this is a great conversation to listen to. There is no better place to learn than from someone who is there and gets it!
In this episode we touch on the motivations of young workers and what they are looking for from employers, and more importantly, from themselves. We also discuss how professional coaching can help drive satisfaction, in ourselves, and our organizations.
